Summer Footwear for Pregnant Women
Swelling bellies are celebrated during pregnancy, but swelling feet - not so much! Summer heat and mild dehydration can make normal pregnancy-induced edema even worse.
“As your belly grows, your center of gravity shifts and your gait will change to compensate,” says Lisa Wilson, a physician with Novant Health Providence OB/GYN. “Supportive shoes are essential for reducing the risk of falls during pregnancy.”
Your feet are literally carrying the load of your whole pregnancy. Make sure you baby them with extra supportive shoes or sandals this summer. We’ve got some suggestions below to help you stay comfortable, safe, and trendy.
The Toms signature shoe is a classic go-to. Made to wear sockless, there’s nothing to do but slip them on - perfect when you can’t reach around your belly! With so many colors and patterns available, you’re sure to find one you love.
Having a breathable, supportive walking shoe is a must during pregnancy. Allbirds’ Tree Runner is crafted out of silky-cool eucalyptus tree fiber with a moisture-wicking merino wool insole, making socks blissfully unnecessary. These shoes will conform to your feet, so no need to worry about summer swelling.
Sanuk’s original shoes were made out of recycled yoga mats, and these flip flop style sandals have that same deliciously cushy sole. With an added heel strap, they are a safer choice for pregnant women, since it’s harder to find them “flipping and flopping” out from under your feet.
With orthotic grade arch support and velcro adjustment at both forefoot and heel, these sandals have all the support and adjustability a pregnant foot needs - without sacrificing style. The silver ones are fancy enough for one last baby-free evening out!
