National Women’s Health & Fitness Day Providence OB/GYN Blog Sep 23 2014 Wednesday, September 24 is National Women’s Health & Fitness Day – the nation’s largest annual health promotion event for women of all ages. This unique national program – with participation by local organizations throughout the U.S. – focuses attention on the importance of regular physical activity and health awareness for women. The goal is to encourage women to take control of their health, to learn the facts they need to make smart health choices, and to make time for regular physical activity. This event provides an excellent opportunity for local organizations to showcase the health-related programs and services they offer to women in their communities. Women’s Health & Fitness Day Activities During National Women's Health & Fitness Day, more than 1,000 groups across the country will host women’s health and fitness events at senior centers, hospitals, health clubs, park and recreation districts, local health and service organizations, schools, retirement communities, houses of worship and other community locations. An estimated 80,000 to 100,000 women of all ages are expected to participate in these local activities. Activities are non-competitive and may include walking events, exercise demonstrations, health screenings and health information workshops. About Health & Fitness Day National Women’s Health & Fitness Day is a public/private good health partnership organized by the Health Information Resource Center (HIRC), a 22-year old national clearinghouse for professionals who work in consumer health markets. The HIRC coordinates all Women’s Day host site registrations and national event promotion and publicity, along with the sale and distribution of official event incentive items: T-shirts, buttons, pens, bags, etc. In addition to National Women’s Health & Fitness Day, other well-known HIRC programs and activities include the 18-year old Family Health & Fitness Day USA, a national family health and wellness event held every September (fitnessday.com), the 21st Annual National Health Information Awards (healthawards.com), the nation’s largest awards program of its kind, and the 16-year old Web Health Awards (webhealthawards.com), recognizing the nation’s best digital health information.
